Noah And The Reasons Of Faith

You will know the truth and the truth will set you free
John 8:32

Timothy Keller is an amazing teacher. I have yet to read one of his books but his podcast is fantastic. Here he talks not just about the need to think about our faith, but the absolute necessity of thinking when related to faith.

"Faith begins with reasoning..... by faith we think... you cannot be Christian without using your brain to its uttermost.... the reason there is not much faith today is because there is not much thinking today.... thinking leads to faith.... thinking is the basis to faith".

Faith and reason aren't not opposed to each other. Thanks Mike for sharing this.

I agree with Timothy Keller: faith is not just an emotional feeling, it's a very intense feeling which involves reason too.

I agree that thinking can compliment faith. Problems arise when thinking preempts faith. We trust in the Lord with our heart and we do not lean on our thinking.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

I am afraid that Keller might have put way too much emphasis on thinking or understanding better. It really depends on which understanding we depend on. Ours or the Lord's! Many could take this to mean that if I think more that I will believe more or better. A depraved mind will just think depraved no matter what or how much you think.
Hi @puritanpreacher, Thanks for your comment. Of course we need to depend on our minds and thinking for all sorts of things... God gave us our brains to use! The Bible also encourages us to love God with all of our beings including our reason. God is not unreasonable. I guess the question is where we ultimately bow to or lean on when there is conflict. And I thank God that I am being renewed every day in my thinking.
