Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
James 2:5
Today I read the book of James and can only say I was deeply challenged by its message. We live in a materialistic world, surrounded by things that make us wonder. But our true sense of wonder must be in the Presence of God. Perhaps it is easier for those who have nothing, to be less distracted by this world and to keep their eyes on the eternal. For us in the west we must continually watch ourselves, lest we become too fond of what we possess. I don't believe material possessions are necessarily bad, it's just the heart that can become bad by turning away from the true source of life.
