Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see...Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."Hebrews 11:1 John 20:29
Faith is believing with certainty what we do not see. That's believing with certainty. We might ask ourselves how we can be certain when it comes to matters of faith; how we can speak with conviction about what we believe. But certainty of faith is important if we choose to follow Jesus Christ. Faith is believing when we do not see, when we do not feel, when God's presence seems far off. This is part of our growing up in Christ. God would have us believe and trust in him in every circumstance of our lives. This is so important for our own security and inner strength.
Now, faith does not mean the absence of fear. The great heroes of faith in the Bible were often also full of fear. If we lack the faith we would like, then it is good to remember that God is the giver of all good gifts. I believe that God is always giving us opportunities to demonstrate our growing faith. I wonder what those opportunities will be today? Let's be the one that shows faith by taking the plunge when all we have is God's word on the matter, even if our knees are trembling a little. It's much more fun than standing on the shore and spectating!
